Almost two decades since the enactment of Republic Act No. 9003, otherwise known as the “Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000” that provides comprehensive framework that shall ensure protection of the environment, solid waste management (SWM) remains to be a perennial challenge in the Philippines, particularly in highly urbanized areas like Metro Manila. As the country’s population increases rapidly, waste generation continues to rise. In a recent report by the Senate Economic Planning Office (SEPO), solid wastes produced by Philippine cities are expected to increase by 165 percent, amounting to 77, 776 tons by 2025. The glaring issues on waste disposals can get worst if Local Government Units fail to close and rehabilitate dumpsites, provide concrete SWM plans, and establish more Material Recovery Facilities.
To help address the growing concern for solid waste management in the country, and in line with the current administration’s drive to intensify environmental protection, a group of entrepreneurs founded Asia Pacific Renewable Energy Solutions (APRES) in 2018. APRES specializes in developing Waste-to-Energy (WtE) projects through Private and Public partnerships. Fundamentally, APRES simplifies the rigorous process of planning, site location, funding, legal requirements, and contract agreement as it serves as a one-stop shop that furnishes the necessary assistance in establishing WtE projects in the country. Essentially, APRES envisions to significantly mitigate waste disposal problems not just in Metro Manila but also in most provinces that has the capacity to build and operate WtE facilities. By bringing the best and most reliable technology available, the process of transforming solid wastes into useful energy is guaranteed efficient and safe. The company aims to provide long-term solutions for renewable and sustainable source of energy in the Philippines that will benefit not only present citizens but more importantly, the future generations.
